Spotlight on the 2016 Spring EGG with Ed Wadel, COO, Panther Premium Logistics

Ed Wadel Chief Operating Officer Panther Premium Logistics

CompanyLogo_BlackThis issue of Spotlight News shines the light on Expediter Services’ third annual EGG (Expediter Group Gathering), to be held April 15th & 16th at the Landers Center in Southaven, Mississippi. This year’s EGG will focus on truck sales and getting to know you on a personal level. The EGG will also feature as a presenter one of the foremost experts in expediting: Ed Wadel, COO, Panther Premium Logistics; who will share his knowledge about the current state of expediting and where the industry is heading within the next 3 to 5 years in the areas of Freight, Growth, Opportunity, Capacity and more.
ES-logo-short-72Ed was kind enough to give us a taste of what to expect from his upcoming presentation at The EGG. So, buckle up, and be prepared for an advanced tutorial on the “State of the Industry”!
Ed’s Background
Ed Wadel has 23 years experience in the expedite industry. Early in his career, he worked as an IT consultant for some of the largest and most successful companies in the world, including BP Oil, Timken-Latrobe Steel and Tilinghast. For thirteen years, Wadel was an onsite IT consultant for Panther and is responsible for the development of much of the technology that Panther uses today. In January 2006, he joined Panther as VP of Information Technology, and was promoted to Chief Information Officer later that year. He now serves as Panther Premium Logistics Chief Operating Officer.
Welcome, Ed, we’re privileged to speak with you about the current state of expediting, and where the industry is going in the near future!
2016-0201-EGG-145adIt’s great to talk with Spotlight News to help give some insights as to where we feel the industry is going. I’m also delighted to be a part of the upcoming EGG. I’m looking forward to seeing the folks at Expediter Services again, as well as meeting a whole new group of people who will be participating in The EGG.
Can you tell us about what you will be discussing at The EGG?
I will discuss four key components of expediting: Freight, Growth, Opportunity and Capacity. As COO of Panther Premium Logistics, I deal with these subjects on a daily basis. At the EGG, I will talk at length about how these components are interconnected and how these connections may affect the industry in the next three to five years.
Let’s jump right in!  What is your take on FREIGHT and its future.
When you look at all of the major market indexes, Morgan Stanley, etc., indicators point to increases in tonnage across the board. Factoring in things like home delivery heading up (which helps to pull capacity out of the market), freight will continue to grow for at least the next five years.
Also, there’s a relatively new phenomenon taking place called “nearshoring”, which means companies are moving their manufacturing closer to the U.S., and away from China to offset the rising costs of freight and logistics. Vietnam and Mexico are two countries where this is rapidly taking place. Nearshoring lends itself toward growth in freight by introducing expediting into new and nearby markets such as Mexico. This brings us to our next point, which is growth.
Please expand upon GROWTH in the industry.
As mentioned earlier, Mexico is a major player in the nearshoring movement. Their growth in the manufacture of automotive and life science (to name a couple of growth industries) presents a huge upside for expediting, as there has never been an expediting presence in that country. The fact that Mexico is so near to the U.S., with easy translating and cross docking at the border, the process is efficient, making it attractive for expediters to move into this market.
Another area for growth is the fact that more companies are realizing that expediting can now become a part of their supply chain. Companies are finding that more “focused” shipping, where they are able to ship smaller units of freight on a smaller truck, is more optimized and efficient than shipping a small load on a half-full tractor. Companies that don’t have expediting as part of their “spend” are actually over paying for the truckload. This realization is beginning to take hold in the market, pushing growth.
Explain how all of this leads to more OPPORTUNITY.
I’m sure Spotlight readers are beginning to see that all of the topics we’re discussing are interconnected. Freight and Growth build upon each other to provide opportunity in the market. But there is also a new paradigm that is evolving as technology becomes more pervasive — and this is known as the “Internet of Things” and “Big Data”. (Learn more about The Internet of Things and Big Data)
Opportunity in expediting is expanded via the sharing of information over the internet. For example: Let’s say you’re driving down the highway anywhere in the USA. Through your ELB, you know how much fuel you have, even when your next break takes place. There’s a truck stop about fifteen miles ahead. Big Data can tell you how many parking spots are available and even fuel prices. On top of that, imagine that this information is tied into inventory control and warehousing systems. The interconnectivity of data has the advantage of helping move freight. Which brings us to our next subject: Capacity.
How does the future look like for CAPACITY?
Interconnectivity and the sharing of information will empower expediters in a number of ways, positively effecting capacity and driver retention. Big Data improves the quality of services to the carrier and the customer. It also improves the quality of life for drivers by providing information about when they can get loads — and when they can go home. These opportunities will only get better in the future as more and more drivers access this information. It’s a win-win for everyone, the customer, carrier & contractor.
Other factors that will effect capacity can be attributed to what is being called a “perfect storm”. This includes: a driver shortage, DOT and other regulations, and increasing freight volumes (including automotive). Any of these disruptions drive freight into the expediter world and are actually good for expediting. Capacity shifting from standard freight to expediting makes retention even more important to the bottom line, up and down the supply chain.
What is your take on Direct Contract Customers versus Load Boards?
Loads boards work when capacity is loose, as it is at the moment. When capacity tightens up, load boards have a distinct disadvantage because they just don’t take care of the customer. There’s absolutely no customer service. It’s advantageous for the customer to be signed up with a carrier who will take care of them, who has the ability to have a margin of pricing control over freight and that they know they are not going to get gouged out in the marketplace. Load boards are always going to be out there, but I don’t see them winning in the long run. Being with a carrier provides peace of mind. Once the carrier is given freight, the customer can forget about it, knowing it will be delivered on time and on budget.
2016-0201-EGG-310adThank you Ed, for giving us a sneak preview of what to expect at The EGG. We look forward to seeing you there!

Taking The Path to Ownership & Success

Everyone’s path in Expediting is different. But one thing is for certain, when you have vision, perseverance and the right opportunity, your path can take you as far as you want to go. Frank and Donna Smith are a husband and wife Expediting team who have taken the Path to Ownership with help from Expediter Services.
pto-logo-tag“Frank and I began as Expediters in 2013. We had been involved with a couple of owners as contract drivers, but the experience wasn’t very good. The equipment was sub-par and we had problems getting paid. We finally found ES through one of our carriers, and things immediately began to look up,” said Donna Smith.
Once the Smiths began settling in as contract drivers with ES, their work history and a trip to The EGG soon began to show that they had potential as future owners. “In the spring of 2014, we heard about The EGG (Expediter Group Gathering) at Expediter Service’s home office in Southaven, Mississippi and we decided to attend. The thought of someday owning our own truck was something we had dreamed about — but we just weren’t sure it was in the cards.
ES-logo-short-72When we got to The EGG and saw the presentation showing the advantages of being owners,  it really got us to thinking in that direction. On top of that, ES’s management team took the time to pull up our numbers. We soon found out that we could take the Path to Ownership. This was something we hadn’t expected, since Frank had been injured several years ago (before we became Expediters) and had been unable to work and drive. We thought this would affect our ability to finance a truck. But we found out our work experience as contract drivers with Expediter Services overcame any past obstacles to financing a truck. We were thrilled and began working towards that goal of ownership,” said Donna.
es-finance
2016-0201-EGG-145adSoon after The EGG, another opportunity presented itself, and the Smith’s signed on to FedEx as their carrier. They dove headlong into the White Glove service and didn’t look back. “When we decided to sign on with FedEx as our carrier, we saw the earning potential of TVAL delivery. We felt this move would enhance our ability to generate revenue as we took the Path to Ownership. In December of 2015, we officially took the step of becoming owners by contacting Steve Kochensparger at Expediter Equipment Finance who helped us with the paperwork. Danny Vernon at Expediter Truck Sales  found us a great 2014 Cascadia reefer with only 250,000 miles on it! The whole process was easy and we’re looking forward to being owners and controlling our own destiny. We also recommend that anyone who is thinking about buying a truck should attend The EGG. The folks at ES can help you understand your finances and see what you need to do to become an owner. It’s very helpful!”
es-truck

The Smith’s work ethic and perseverance paid real dividends when it came to their taking the Path to Ownership, and according to Donna, Expediting is a path, as well as a process. “As Expediters, you’re always learning. While taking our Path to Ownership, we learned that becoming Owner Operators is a process. It doesn’t happen over night. But when you find the right opportunity and the right support, you can achieve your dreams. In the future, we may purchase another truck or two and become fleet owners. But right now, we’re concentrating on doing what we do best and that’s driving — and that’s fine by us.”

Changing Your Family’s Future

jimmymoore

Jimmy Moore and his son Joshua (10 years old)

Quite a lot has happened since Spotlight News last spoke with Jimmy and Bobbi Moore in October of 2014 (read their story here). Since then, their fleet and business has grown — with help from Expediter Services, and they’re now grooming their two young sons to become Expediters as the couple looks to the future.
When the Moores first made the leap as Owner Operators, they made a commitment to each other, their business and their family to do whatever it takes to one day make their dream of becoming successful fleet owners come true. “From the beginning, we as a family made the decision to do whatever it took to build our business to the point where I could stay home and manage the fleet. It took a lot of hard work and sacrifice, but we were able to achieve our goal in less than two years. Also, ES was a major factor in helping our business grow in order to meet this goal,” said Moore.
es-truck
The long hours and commitment have paid off as the Moores now have a fleet of eight trucks. “It’s so easy to buy and finance a truck through ES. I call Danny Vernon at Expediter Truck Sales and tell him what I want. I’m immediately put in touch with Expediter Equipment Finance, and about a week later the finance papers arrive. All I have to do is sign the papers, get them notarized and send them back to ES and I’m done! It truly is the easiest part about what I do. Soon afterwards, I place a team in the truck and we’re generating revenue.”
es-finance
According to Moore, the right equipment also makes a difference when it comes to building and running a successful fleet. “Our very first truck was a Class 7, which I want to emphasize was NOT purchased from Expediter Services, was a disaster. It was trouble from the start, making it difficult to be profitable. But Bobbi and I were able to add a second truck to start building a fleet. Luckily, we found Expediter Truck Sales! Now, all of our trucks are 2013 & 14 Cascadias sourced from Expediter Services fleet. These trucks are incredible! I have one Cascadia with just over 600,000 miles and it is going strong with little to no maintenance issues. Expediter Services hit a home run when they spec’d these trucks. The trucks get great fuel mileage and they just run and run. I recommend these pre-owned trucks to anyone either driving or building a fleet.  They’re without a doubt the best value in the market today. We also have a ninth truck in the pipeline that should be ready by the time this article hits the internet.”
Jimmy and Bobbi continue to build and plan for the future — and they have a couple of young Expediters waiting in the wings to take the helm in the not too distant future. “Our sons just love Expediting! Joshua (10 years old), can tell you everything you would ever wanted to know about an expediting truck. Jimmy, Junior (15 years old), actually works for us and does our truck revenues every morning. They both are very involved, including acquisitions, how the trucks are running and practically every other aspect of the business. You name it and they are learning about it. I can’t tell you how important it is to be home and to be with them as they grow up. Expediting and Expediter Services helped us change the direction of our family’s future.”

And speaking of the future, Moore is already making cold hard plans for his fleet. “In 2016, we plan to add four more trucks. But this time, we’re looking to purchase at least one reefer unit, possibly more, and enter into White Glove service. Expediter Services is speccing and selling some great refrigerated units from their fleet and this represents a great opportunity for us. It’s great to be able to make real plans with a partner like Expediter Services.”

New Truck. New Year. New Path to Success.

Seventeenth century English philosopher John Locke once said, “As people are walking all the time, in the same spot, a path appears.” If you translate this into modern Expediting terminology it would read: “As people are driving all the time, on the same road, a Path to Ownership appears.” And that’s where we begin this issue of Spotlight News, highlighting Ivan and Varina Rainbolt’s path to truck ownership, with help from Expediter Services.
pto-logo-tag
The Rainbolt’s began their career in trucking in 2007 driving tractor trailers. But after a short time behind the wheel, they began to suspect that there might be a better way to make a living over-the-road. “After about a year of driving tractors, I had just about enough and was ready to try something new,” said Varina Rainboldt. “We talked to people who drove Expediting trucks and they told us about how much easier they were to drive and how the lifestyle was just so much better. We were lucky that when we made the move to Expediting, we found a good owner and stuck with him for a number of years.”
es-finance
After a short time, their new owner made the move to FedEx as their carrier and the Rainbolt’s soon became White Glove TVAL drivers. Even though they were happy with their situation, the desire to someday own their own truck always filled their windshield. “Ivan and I have always wanted to own our own truck, but finding the right opportunity to make that move was challenging to say the least. We learned about Expediter Services while doing research online. Soon, we were in contact with Jeff Tacker and told him about our desire to be owners. He spent a lot of time with us discussing our options. We decided to become contract drivers at Expediter Services to learn more about the business before making the leap to ownership. That was in July of this year.”

As Ivan and Varina would soon find out, the transition to Expediter Services as contract drivers would accelerate their path to ownership. “When we moved to ES as contractors, it was like night and day. The support we got was tremendous and we learned so much more about the expediting business. Also, Jeff put us in touch with Patrick Lee and Eric Hyfield, (read their story) two owners who have utilized Expediter Services to build a successful fleet. We went to dinner with them and discussed how they built their business. This really motivated us and helped focus our efforts about being owners. We made the decision to purchase a truck, which is just what we did at the end of October.”
es-truck
Now that the decision was made to become truck owners, Expediter Truck Sales and Expediter Equipment Finance kicked into high gear to find & finance the right truck. “Danny Vernon at ETS found us a great lightly used 2014 Cascadia WGTVAL truck with a 100-inch custom sleeper from Expediter Services’ fleet. We saved a bundle because it was used. The truck has all the service records and it’s still under the factory warranty, too. I think we got a really good deal. We utilized Expediter Equipment Finance for financing. It was a pleasant surprise when the transaction was done so quickly. The whole thing was just so easy,” said Varina.
With the holidays and the New Year approaching, the Rainbolts are looking to the future with much anticipation. “We’re looking forward to the earning potential of being truck owners. With the holiday crush coming up, it is going to be interesting to see the difference in our bottom line. And we’re looking forward to the New Year in our new truck. I can definitely see opportunities in the future for adding more trucks as we grow,” said Ivan.

From Corporate America to Owner Operator

The Evans’ 2013 Cascadia sourced from Expediter Services’ Fleet

It’s truly fascinating to learn how people from all walks of life enter the business of Expediting. This issue of Expediter Spotlight shines the light on Larry and Eudora Evans, a couple who stuck their toes into the Expediting waters years ago to find out that the timing just wasn’t quite right. Shortly afterward, they both climbed the corporate ladder to find out that sometimes that ladder can be a bit rickety, to say the least. As you’ll see, their dreams of starting a successful Expediting career would lead them to owning their own truck and controlling their own destiny.

New Truck Owners Larry and Eudora Evans

“Our first venture into trucking came about eight years ago,” said Eudora Evans. “Larry and I had been married a little over a year. Neither of us liked our professions at the time, so we decided to try driving a truck. We went to work for an owner operator but the situation soon turned south. We weren’t being paid on time and things just got worse from there. We liked the idea of driving a truck but the timing just wasn’t good, so Larry went back to working in “Corporate America” at a national food manufacturer. I sang at night in New Orleans as a jazz and soul singer.”

The Evans’ life in the corporate world was off and running. Larry rose within the company and Eudora was soon hired on. But little did they know, their lives and careers would take an unexpected turn. “Even though we worked for the same company, we didn’t see that much of each other. We were literally like two ships passing in the night, and I was still singing in New Orleans. Our schedules were a bit stressful, but nothing like what was about to happen,” said Eudora!

In March of 2015, their employer had a nation-wide health recall of their products which negatively effected the company, leaving the Evans’ wondering about their future. “We knew the food recall was serious and had the potential to shut down the company or at least affect our positions. We decided that it would be a good time to look into Expediting again, as we already had been watching the trends within the industry and it was something that we had been wanting to do for a long time. I got online and went to Expediter Services’ website and made a call. The rest as they say is history.”
es-finance

This time, Eudora and Larry’s foray into Expediting would be different. Their call to Expediter Services got them in touch with the right people to get their new career on track right away. “Our dream was always to own our own truck. Over the years we have been saving and working on paying off student loans, as we both have degrees. We were concerned that we would be unable to qualify to be owners. We spoke to the folks at Expediter Equipment Finance and we were pleasantly surprised to find out that we qualified to buy our own truck! Once we were approved, Danny Vernon contacted us to tell us about a slightly used 2013 Cascadia sourced from their very own fleet. It’s a great truck and an incredible value. It has a TriPac generator, a 22-foot box and a 72 inch sleeper. We’re absolutely thrilled with it!”
es-truck

In addition to purchasing their new truck, The Evans’ tapped into the support provided by Expediter Services, and signed on with a carrier. “One of the most exciting things about becoming expediters is the support we get from ES. They were able to provide us with real revenue projections of the cash flow we can produce with this truck. The information helped make us comfortable with the purchase and gave us a real goal to shoot for, which I know we can do because of our work ethic. Also, the on-going support from ES’s Owner Operator program provides us with the help we need with paperwork and settlements.  Once we got the financing in place, we signed on with Panther as our carrier. We’ve been on the road since September and haven’t stopped running since.”And as you may have already guessed, they’re already planning for their Expediting future. “From the get go, Larry has wanted to be a fleet owner. Now that we’ve hooked up with Expediter Services, we’re confident that we can make this happen. Our plan is to pay off this truck and buy another one — and continue this process until we’ve built up a sizeable fleet. There truly is nothing like working for yourself and putting your destiny in your own hands!”

From Semi-retirement to Full-Time Owner Operators

Dorr and Anne Tymon with their Custom 2014 Cascadia from Expediter Truck Sales

The great thing about Expediting is the opportunities that are available to practically anyone. It doesn’t matter about your age, gender, or even your background. Expediting can help launch a first, second or even third career. This installment of Spotlight News shines the light on Dorr and Anne Tymon, a couple who’ve already had successful careers and love the road, but they weren’t quite ready to drive off into the sunset.
“I was in retail management for thirty years and Dorr was an owner operator back in the eighties driving big rigs. We also owned a successful dry cleaning business and a restaurant. You could say we’ve had our fingers in a  number of different pies over the years. And we’ve always had the desire to work for ourselves one way or the other,” said Anne.

After so many years of working, the Tymons decided it was time to take off and enjoy life, so they took to full-time RV’ing. “Over the last four years, Dorr and I traveled across all forty eight of the lower states. We had a great time because we both love the road so much. But Dorr got the itch to get back to driving commercially and bought a tractor last summer running a reefer. Things were going great, then we met a guy at a campground who owned two Expediting trucks — and things changed!”
es-finance
Things changed alright as they realized that Expediting would be their new career. “After talking to people who were into Expediting, Dorr contracted the Expediting itch in a big way! He nudged me into getting my commercial license, which I got this past April. Then we began a new career as Expeditors in May, signed on with Panther as our carrier. We drove as Contract Drivers for a few months and found out we really liked it. We were really drawn to the lifestyle and the earning potential and soon decided we wanted to own our own truck.”
Like many folks who decide to become Owner Operators, the Tymon’s began doing research on where to find the best truck for their money. “Once we made the decision to become owners, we began asking around about where to get a truck and our rep at Panther recommended that we contact Expediter Services. So, we made a call. The folks at ES were very helpful and hooked us up with Danny Vernon at Expediter Truck Sales. He found us a very nice slightly used 2013 Cascadia from Expediter Services fleet and we made the trip down to ES’s offices in Southaven, Mississippi to pick it up.”
es-truck

But this is where their story takes an unexpected turn. ” No sooner had we started looking over the 2013 Cascadia we had picked out, Dorr spotted a 2014 Cascadia with a Bolt Custom sleeper sitting in the parking lot being power washed. It was love at first sight! He decided right then and there this wasthe truck for us. Danny Vernon was more than happy to help us acquire this newer truck. Soon we were in touch with Steve Kochensparger at Expediter Equipment Finance and the deal was done. The whole thing was so easy. Dorr just loves this truck and I love the Custom 100 inch sleeper! We’ve been on the road for just about a week and have made a few runs already. We feel like we got a great deal, especially since this unit is a 2014. “

The Tymon’s are also looking to help their son get into the business. “There’s so much opportunity in Expediting. We’re talking to our son, who is twenty-five about getting his Class B license. We’re wanting to buy another truck from Expediter Truck Sales so he and a friend can earn a good income. The level of support you get from Expediter Services Owner Operator program would be so helpful for someone just starting out. The fuel card alone makes purchasing fuel so easy & efficient. It’s exciting to think about the potential for growth for all of us with help from Expediter Services.”

When the Timing is Right, You know It

For twenty years, Ruben Teodosiu has been a trucker. About eight years ago, he knew the time was right to steer his driving career into something with a better lifestyle, income potential and opportunity. In case you haven’t already guessed, he chose Expediting, and he hasn’t looked back since.
“When I first started in the business, I drove a dry unit for a couple of months for a well-known carrier. Then in September 2007, I took the opportunity to sign on with FedEx Custom Critical and became qualified for their White Glove division,” said Teodosiu.
pto-logo-tag
But it wasn’t long before he realized the earning potential as the owner of a custom unit and began a dialogue with Expediter Services about future ownership opportunities. “I talked with Jeff Tacker all the way back in 2010 about ES’s Owner Operator Program. Later Jeff was promoted to Vice President of Operations and so I decided to call to congratulate him since I knew in my near future, I would be a part of their program. I knew at the time I wasn’t quite ready to make the move, but they were supportive and the knowledge I gained helped put me on the Path to Ownership. From these early conversations, I formulated a game plan. I knew it was just a matter of time before I’d own my own unit,” said Teodosiu.
es-finance
Recently, the timing was right and based upon Teodosiu’s high productivity level, he purchased a custom refrigerated unit of his very own — from Expediter Services very own fleet. “When people think about a custom truck, the first things that come to mind is usually custom sleepers and other amenities. But for me, since my business revolves around FedEx Custom Critical’s White Glove service, the most important thing was that the truck is a White Glove TVAL unit. I was lucky in that regard because the truck I bought was the same TVAL unit I’ve driven since new for the past year and eight months as a Contract Driver with Expediter Services! Since the truck was slightly used, I got it for a much discounted price of a new unit. On top of that, I know the truck backwards and forwards and I felt more than comfortable with owning it. I also utilized Expediter Equipment Finance for the financing. The transaction was all so easy and I really got a great deal!”
es-truck
“When it comes to owning your own truck, it’s all about timing and opportunity. My plans are to start building a fleet in the near future and I have no doubt I will be able to achieve this goal with Expediter Services supporting me. When the time comes for me to purchase another truck from Expediter Services/Expediter Truck Sales, I’ll know it.”

Taking the Path to Ownership — with a Twist

Jean McCallum and her driving partner, Robert Eccleston

The decision to own your own truck varies from one person or team to the next. Sometimes, ownership is the result of the right circumstances and opportunity presenting itself at the right time. Others plan for truck ownership at the beginning of their Expediting career. But no matter which path you take, there’s really no wrong time to buy a truck when you’re ready to become an owner.

Jean McCallum and her driving partner, Robert Eccleston are the latest example of a team whose path to ownership began with a plan — and a twist, as they started off their Expediting career working for a fleet owner. “We began as Expediters in January of this year, signed on with Panther, and a fleet owner, Lyn Brumfield, (see his story here) who was utilizing Expediter Services Owner Operator Program (Expediter Management Services). I guess you could say we started our career as Expediters with a whole lot of support from everybody,” said McCallum!
pto-logo-tagThe fact that McCallum and Eccleston drove for another fleet owner didn’t deter their dreams of becoming owners themselves. “Our background is in business. From the very beginning we knew that ownership would be in our future and once we got on the road and began generating income, we were able to run the numbers. It soon became clear that we were going to make the leap in fairly short order,” said McCallum. “Our fleet owner, Lyn Brumfield, understood our entrepreneurial desires and was supportive all the way. Expediters are great that way. Especially when they are on the Road Best Traveled.”
es-truck

The next step in McCallum and Eccleston’s quest for ownership involved a call to Expediter Equipment Finance and Expediter Truck Sales. “We spoke with Steve Kochensparger at Expediter Equipment Finance to get the paperwork started, which included our revenue numbers we produced while on Lyn Brumfield’s truck. Once the financing was in place, Danny Vernon (Expediter Truck Sales Manager) found us a 2013 Freightliner Cascadia sourced from ES’s fleet. We got a great truck! It’s in excellent shape and it was a real deal compared to what we would have had to pay for a new one!”

“We then visited Expediter Services’ office in Southaven, Mississippi this past Friday and picked up our truck. We were pleasantly surprised at how fast and efficient the whole process was from start to finish. We’ve been running our new Cascadia for less than a week now and things are going well. We’re looking forward to earning even more of the pie as owners, and our goal is to build a fleet of 4 to 5 trucks in the not too distant future.”

Helping to Provide Support & Opportunity

For those of us who keep up with the latest trucking industry trends, the current driver’s shortage in the U.S. is familiar news. When you combine this shortage with the recent rise in demand for freight, you have a recipe for volatility — and opportunity. So when David Neese, Expediter Services’ Recruiter was asked to accompany representatives from FEDEX Custom Critical to address a newly formed class of driving students at Craven Community College in Bern, North Carolina to discuss these opportunities, he jumped at the chance!

Why did FEDEX Custom Critical want to address students at Craven Community College?

David Neese Expediter Services Recruiter

Craven Community College recently introduced a new driving class to help prospective drivers earn their CDL and they wanted to provide students with information about the opportunities they offer to new drivers.  This was Craven’s inaugural class made up of 11 students from diverse backgrounds. FEDEX provided information about their various programs for independent contractors and owner operators.

Why was Expediter Services asked to accompany FEDEX for this presentation?

We were asked to support FEDEX Custom Critical by presenting programs for contractors and owner operators through the eyes of Expediter Services. I spoke about how trucking has changed over the years and how the shortage of drivers and the increased demand in freight was opening up long-term opportunities for contractors and owners. It was a great opportunity to share how Expediter Services supports FEDEX Custom Critical’s efforts.

What were some of the other topics discussed?

Craven Community College trucks ready for training

FEDEX and I talked about the importance of safety and regulations in the industry. Students were also very interested to know about how owner operators could get started and make money, even if they didn’t own their own equipment at first. I shared with them how many successful owner operators and fleet owners had started out as contractors, learned the business, then used Expediter Equipment Finance to purchase their own truck. They were pleasantly surprised to find out that Expediter Services provides real ownership opportunities by taking a driver’s work history into account when financing a truck. I also was able to allay student’s misgivings and fears about getting started in expediting by explaining how contractors and owners who are affiliated with Expediter Services Never Stand Alone because of our support services and programs, such as the Owner Operator Program and our Circle of Success marketing strategy.

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us about your visit?

CCC ready to welcome students

Absolutely! Craven’s new driving class is open to anyone who is interested in becoming a driver and accessing the opportunities in trucking. The school is also partnering with the military to help train personnel transitioning into civilian life. Nearby Fort Cherry is just one military facility that will benefit. The driving class will provide opportunities that otherwise may not be readily accessible to those entering back into the civilian workforce. As a matter of fact, there was one student finishing up their CDL who was going to run for fleet owner Padriaca Prude who runs under our Owner Operator program. (read his story here)
It was a true privilege to get to support FEDEX Custom Critical and share the many opportunities that Expediter Services has to offer new drivers who drive straight trucks or tractors.
